Triple T’s Review of ‘The Fat Cactus’

The perfect spot to meet up with good friends and enjoy delicious food and amazing drinks, is located right in the middle of Cape Town, with a buzz all night long.

From the food to drinks to the vibe and even patrons, this place screams chilled out Mexican. Everyone is having a good time with a bucket full of ice cold Corona and pitchers of frozen Margarita, and then the best part begins.

It is authentic Mexican cuisine, so salsa, beans, and chili is all round and the fun part of it all is obviously building your own dishes. Sharing snacks, tacos, quesadillas, fajitas, burritos, nachos, this place has it all. A single visit really is just not enough.

We started off with the classic nachos, a great starter for two people and getting those stomachs ready for what lies ahead.

We absolutely love building our own meals, from burgers to pizza and our favourite, FAJITAS. We ordered ourselves BBQ steak fajitas that come with a load of sides. Cheese, salsa, sour cream, beans, rice, guacamole and coriander in everything. Now some people might not like it, but it sure does add a great Mexican flavour. Putting together our own combinations for every fajita had the waitress running back and forth bringing us more warm tortilla wraps. She could almost not keep up with our incredible appetite. Following each fajita was a glass of frozen lime and mango margarita. Perfect combo.

They have desserts as well, and don’t worry, there’s no coriander in these. It isn’t Mexican desserts at all, but really, I don’t mind it that much. I’m not the biggest fan of Mexican desserts, to be honest. Maybe one day someone will prove to me that it is worth it. We asked our waitress what desserts they have and all I heard was chocolate brownie with ice-cream, my favourite. She couldn’t even tell us the rest, my order was in.

It arrived at our table and I fell in love.

This dessert was absolutely delectable. The brownie was warm and fudgy, but very moist and rich. Pecan nuts all over to give it a bit of texture. Vanilla ice-cream to cool you down, and chocolate sauce to just bring everything together.

I will walk back to Cape Town for another one of those bad boys.

If you are looking for a place to spend the night with great friends and enjoy good food, then look no further.
